Reach

I have a fear of rejection. I care so much about people’s validation that I’m often tempted to cater to their ideals, and yet, I profoundly desire to be known authentically. Connection reminds me that no matter who I think I am, I am worthy. 

Only once I let myself be authentic with others did I begin to build meaningful connections, and grow in my satisfaction with myself. Ironically, allowing myself to be me takes the focus off of me, and allows me to pour into others. I’ve never been more at peace than when I’ve felt known.

I created this piece as a way to communicate that longing for connection. It takes a lot of vulnerability to reach out, not knowing if someone will do the same. It’s easier to stay put and pretend we don’t care. But growth only happens when we reach out. I believe that as we grow, we’ll grow closer to others. They are inextricable. Growth does not happen without connection, and connection does not happen without vulnerability. Connecting with others is one of the most human things we can do. Fortunately, there is someone else who understands what it means to be human. Jesus knows you personally and tells you that you are always worthy. Even though it can be scary, we all need the same thing: connection.

So reach out.
