On Parting Well
Come now, you holy ones
who have tasted sweet honey,
who have spoken and were spoken to,
who have loved one another
in the bliss of cutlery colliding against plates,
in the cloistered spaces, scrubbing dishes elbow to elbow,
in the ellipses of bad jokes told one too many times,
and the benediction of late night chatter over mac n’ cheese.
Come now.
Let us be wise in our photography and in our journalling,
to know what to hold loosely and what to
raise as our keepsake,
trusting the routine pots of tea
and the unfinished Scrabble games
have done their work—a good work
and as needed, will continue on...
and trust that wherever you go,
somewhere in your ephemeral bones,
I echo on with you and you with me.
