Bread of Presence

In rising light, I stumble

to the kitchen

and stand in service

of the yeast:

I’ll make the bread again that God won’t eat.

Last week, I gave away

two braided loaves

my children wouldn’t suffer:

No one had liked the taste

Of cardamom.

Even I confess appetite for something new.

Still, this recipe has not once failed:

Give us this day our daily bread.
