Behind the Scenes at Imprint: With Creative Director, Katy Togeretz

  1. What’s your day job?

I run my own business with a magazine and art shop for people with chronic illness and do contract work in design, writing, and editing.

  2. How long have you attended Grace Toronto Church?

    3 years

  3. What do you do for Imprint?

I’ve worked on most aspects of Imprint (editorial, web, social media) but for this issue my primary responsibility was the layout design.

  4. What initially inspired you to join the Imprint team?

I studied magazine publishing and I’ve worked for both print and digital publications. I love magazines so much that I even started my own. I couldn’t help but laugh at how God works when I found out the church my husband and I started attending upon moving to Toronto happened to publish a magazine. I showed up to that first meeting, introduced myself to Jen Michel, and asked her to please let me help. Joining the Imprint team was an easy decision and I’ve loved being part of its growth over the last few years.

  5. What’s your favourite piece for the upcoming print issue and why?

Working on the layout offers me a perspective on the issue as a whole. I love how all the disparate elements come together to create something that’s cohesive and takes the reader on a journey. That being said, I really loved Jeffrey Hynds’ piece on Marilyn Dumont’s book of poetry, A Really Good Brown Girl. I feel pretty strongly about the idea of art that welcomes anyone, regardless of credentials or experience. I also love the richness and depth of Dorothy Leung’s artwork that accompanies the piece “Lead Me to the Cross”.

  6. Tell us something surprising about Imprint behind the scenes!

One of the things that I love (and simultaneously am frustrated by) is the way we can spend 30 minutes dissecting a minute detail like whether we should use dashes or parentheses in a headline. Sometimes it feels ridiculous but it also displays how much we care about what we’re making. Art is a mix of big picture ideas and painstaking details and I love that we have people who care about each stage of the process.
